Registering a trademark in Turkey protects your brand name, logo, or slogan with TÜRKPATENT — the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. This guide walks you through every step of the process in 2026.

Written by Hakan Elçi, official TÜRKPATENT trademark agent — License No. 2732.

Why Register a Trademark in Turkey?

Turkey operates a first-to-file trademark system. This means the first party to file an application — not the first to use the mark — is granted rights. Without registration, your brand has limited legal protection even if you've been using it for years.

A registered trademark with TÜRKPATENT gives you exclusive rights across Turkey for 10 years, renewable indefinitely. It also provides the legal basis to stop copycats and counterfeiters.

Who Can Apply?

Both individuals and companies — Turkish nationals and foreign entities alike — can file a trademark application in Turkey. Foreign applicants must be represented by an authorized trademark agent licensed with TÜRKPATENT.

Step-by-Step: How to Register a Trademark in Turkey

1
~2 hours

Free Preliminary Search

Search the TÜRKPATENT database for identical or confusingly similar marks. This step identifies risks before you invest in filing — and can save significant time and money.

2
Same day

Select Nice Classes and Prepare the Application

Your goods and services are categorised under the International Nice Classification (45 classes). Selecting the right classes is critical — too few leaves gaps in protection; too many means unnecessary official fees.

3
Same day

File with TÜRKPATENT Online

The application is submitted electronically through TÜRKPATENT's e-government integrated portal. The filing date is your priority date — protection begins from this moment.

4
2–4 weeks

Formal Examination

TÜRKPATENT checks that the application is formally complete. Any deficiencies are flagged with a deadline to remedy them. Applications filed through an agent rarely have formal issues.

5
4–8 months

Substantive Examination & Publication

An examiner reviews the mark for absolute grounds for refusal (descriptiveness, deceptiveness, etc.). If approved, it is published in the Official Trademark Bulletin for a 2-month opposition period.

6
~1 month

Registration Certificate Issued

Once the opposition period closes without a successful challenge, the registration fee is paid and TÜRKPATENT issues the official certificate. Your trademark is now protected for 10 years.

Timeline: How Long Does It Take?

The full process from filing to receiving the registration certificate typically takes around 6 months. Protection starts from the filing date, so the clock starts the moment we submit your application. Opposition proceedings or office actions can extend the timeline, but these are the exception rather than the rule.

Required Documents

  • Mark representation (JPEG/PNG, transparent background recommended for figurative marks)
  • Applicant's identification / tax registration details
  • List of goods and services with Nice class numbers
  • Power of attorney (required when using an agent)
  • Priority documents (if claiming priority from a foreign application)

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Foreign individuals and companies can register trademarks in Turkey. However, they must appoint an authorized TÜRKPATENT trademark agent to represent them — direct filing by foreign parties is not permitted. We handle the entire process remotely.

No. Turkey is not an EU member state, so a European Union Trademark (EUTM) does not extend to Turkey. Separate protection in Turkey requires either a national TÜRKPATENT application or an international application via the Madrid Protocol designating Turkey.

Yes. Turkey is a member of the Madrid Protocol. If you already have a base application or registration in your home country, you can extend protection to Turkey through a single international application via WIPO. We can assist with Madrid Protocol filings as well.

During the 2-month publication period, third parties may file an opposition. If an opposition is received, both sides present their arguments; TÜRKPATENT then issues a decision. We represent clients through the entire opposition process.
