Trademark Renewal in Turkey: Deadlines, Grace Period and 2026 Fees
A Turkish trademark is protected for ten years from the application date, not the registration date, and must be renewed in the six months before expiry, or within a further six month grace period on payment of a surcharge. After that the right terminates and cannot be restored. The 2026 official fee is TRY 8,730 for up to two classes and TRY 15,420 in the grace period. This guide covers the calculation that foreign portfolios most often get wrong, partial renewal and the power of attorney it requires, why renewal is no defence to a non-use revocation, and the recordal failures that actually cause lost marks.
Short answer: a Turkish trademark is protected for ten years from the application date, not from the registration date, and it is renewable for further ten year terms without limit. The renewal request and fee must be filed in the six months before expiry. If that window is missed, there is a further six month grace period after expiry with a surcharge. After the grace period the right ends, and it cannot be restored: the only route back is a fresh application, which starts a new filing date and exposes you to anything filed in the meantime. The 2026 official renewal fee is TRY 8,730 for up to two classes and TRY 15,420 for a renewal filed in the grace period.
Renewal is the least interesting task in a trademark portfolio and the one that loses the most rights. The failure is almost never a decision, it is an address that was never updated, a contact who left, or a diary that was kept by a firm the company stopped instructing four years ago.
When the Clock Starts: the Application Date
Under Article 23 of Industrial Property Law No. 6769, protection runs for ten years from the date of application. This is the single most common miscalculation in foreign portfolios, because registration in Türkiye typically follows filing by eight to twelve months, and sometimes much longer where there has been an opposition. A portfolio spreadsheet keyed to the registration certificate date will consistently show renewal dates up to a year late, which puts the real deadline in the past by the time anyone acts on it.
| Event | Example date |
|---|---|
| Application filed | 14 March 2016 |
| Registration certificate issued | 2 February 2017 (irrelevant to the renewal date) |
| Protection expires | 14 March 2026 |
| Ordinary renewal window opens | 14 September 2025 |
| Ordinary renewal window closes | 14 March 2026 |
| Grace period with surcharge ends | 14 September 2026 |
| Right is gone, no restoration | 15 September 2026 |
The Two Windows
- The ordinary window: the six months before expiry. File the request and pay the fee here. Nothing is gained by waiting, and the renewed term runs from the expiry date regardless of when in the window you file.
- The grace period: the six months after expiry. The renewal is still possible, at a substantially higher fee. During this period the registration is in an uncertain state, which is not a comfortable position if you are simultaneously enforcing against a copyist.
- After that: nothing. The right terminates. There is no restoration procedure and no discretionary relief. What is lost is the filing date, the seniority of the mark, and the ability to rely on the registration for anything that happened while it was lapsed.
2026 Official Fees
| Item | Official fee, 2026 tariff |
|---|---|
| Renewal, up to two classes, filed in the ordinary window | TRY 8,730 |
| Each third and subsequent class | TRY 750 to 1,310 |
| Renewal filed in the six month grace period | TRY 15,420 |
| By way of comparison: new application, single class, plus registration fee | TRY 2,820 plus TRY 7,010 |
Attorney fees are separate and freely agreed; our own are set out on the pricing page. TÜRKPATENT revises the tariff every January, so a quotation given in December is a different number in February. Note also that letting a mark lapse and refiling is not the cheap alternative it looks like on this table: the new application starts a new ten year term from a new date, loses the original seniority, goes through examination and publication again, and can be blocked by anything filed in the interval.
Partial Renewal
You may renew for some of the registered classes and let the rest lapse. This is the moment to prune a specification that was drafted optimistically ten years ago, because unused classes are not free: they cost renewal fees, and they are exposed to a revocation request on the non-use ground.
One formality: partial renewal requires a power of attorney that expressly confers authority for it. A general authority to renew is not enough to give up part of a registration, which is a specific instance of the rule described in our guide to the documents and power of attorney required in Türkiye. If a partial renewal is even a possibility, get the wording into the power of attorney before the deadline is close.
Renewal Does Not Protect You From Non-Use
A renewed registration and a used registration are different things. Renewal keeps the entry on the register; it says nothing about whether the mark has been put to genuine use in Türkiye, and it is no answer to a revocation request. Since 10 January 2024 that request is decided by TÜRKPATENT rather than by the courts, the owner gets one month to produce evidence, and the procedure runs on a closed record. The whole mechanism is set out in our guide to non-use cancellation at TÜRKPATENT.
Practically, renewal is the natural moment to run a use audit alongside it. For each class you are about to pay to renew, ask whether you could produce dated Turkish invoices for it. Where you could not, the choice is to start using it, to drop it from the renewal, or to renew it knowing the exposure. All three are defensible; not knowing which one you are choosing is not.
Madrid Protocol Registrations Renew at WIPO
If Türkiye is covered through a designation in an international registration, the renewal is made centrally at WIPO for the international registration as a whole, on the international registration's own ten year cycle, not through TÜRKPATENT and not on the Turkish filing date. Portfolios that hold both direct Turkish registrations and Madrid designations therefore run two different renewal calendars, which is worth mapping once rather than discovering at a deadline. The differences between the two routes are set out in our guide to the Madrid Protocol and Türkiye.
Recordal Hygiene: the Real Cause of Lost Marks
TÜRKPATENT sends notifications to the address on the register, and to the attorney of record where there is one. Deadlines run from that notification whether or not anyone read it. The failure patterns are consistent.
- An address that is three offices out of date. Record changes of address as they happen, not at the next renewal.
- A company name changed after a merger, never recorded. This complicates renewal, enforcement and any sale of the brand.
- An attorney of record who no longer acts for you. The notifications are being served validly on someone who has no reason to forward them.
- Renewal diarised from the registration date. Rebuild the diary from application dates.
- A portfolio inherited in an acquisition with no diary at all. Audit it before the first deadline finds you.
Watch Out for Renewal Scam Invoices
Trademark owners worldwide receive official looking invoices offering renewal, publication or entry in a private register, often quoting the correct mark, number and date because that information is public. They come from private companies with no connection to TÜRKPATENT and no connection to your attorney. The rule is simple: renewal instructions and renewal invoices come from your attorney of record, and nothing else needs to be paid. If something arrives that looks official and you are unsure, forward it before paying.
Working With Elçi Patent
Elçi Patent is run by Hakan Elçi, a trademark attorney entered on the TÜRKPATENT register under number 2732. We keep renewal diaries for foreign portfolios, run partial renewal and use audits before the deadline rather than after it, record changes of name and address, and take over portfolios that arrive without a reliable diary. If you are instructing as a firm rather than as the brand owner, see our page for law firms, and if a mark has already lapsed and been taken by someone else, see our guide on recovering a trademark registered by another party.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a trademark registration last in Turkey?
Ten years from the application date, under Article 23 of Industrial Property Law No. 6769, renewable for further ten year periods without limit. The registration date does not affect the calculation, which is a common source of error in foreign portfolio records.
When can I renew a Turkish trademark?
In the six months before the protection expires. If that window is missed, the renewal can still be filed within six months after expiry on payment of a surcharge. After the grace period the right terminates and cannot be restored.
How much does trademark renewal cost in Turkey in 2026?
The official fee is TRY 8,730 for up to two classes filed in the ordinary window, with TRY 750 to 1,310 for each third and subsequent class, and TRY 15,420 for a renewal filed during the six month grace period. Attorney fees are separate. TÜRKPATENT revises the tariff each January.
What happens if I miss the Turkish trademark renewal deadline entirely?
The registration terminates and there is no restoration procedure. The only route back is a new application, which takes a new filing date, loses the original seniority, goes through examination and publication again, and can be defeated by any application filed in the meantime.
Can I renew a Turkish trademark for only some of its classes?
Yes. Partial renewal is available and is a sensible way to prune classes you no longer use, since unused classes cost renewal fees and are exposed to revocation for non-use. Partial renewal requires a power of attorney that expressly confers authority for it.
Does renewing protect my trademark from cancellation for non-use?
No. Renewal keeps the registration on the register but says nothing about use. A mark that has not been put to genuine use in Türkiye for five uninterrupted years can be revoked by TÜRKPATENT on request, however many times it has been renewed.
How are Madrid Protocol designations of Turkey renewed?
Centrally at WIPO, as part of the international registration, on that registration's own ten year cycle. They are not renewed through TÜRKPATENT and their renewal date is not the Turkish filing date, so portfolios holding both direct registrations and designations run two separate calendars.
I received a renewal invoice from a company I do not recognise. Is it genuine?
Almost certainly not. Trademark owners routinely receive official looking invoices from private companies offering renewal or entry in a private directory, using publicly available register data. Renewal instructions and invoices come from your attorney of record. Forward anything unexpected before paying it.
